Water is one of the Earth’s most valuable resources, and conserving water is a responsibility of everyone in the family. For families with children, teaching young ones water conservation is a lesson they will carry for a lifetime.
Conserving water inside the home requires modification of simple, daily habits. For men who shave with a disposable razor and shaving cream, do not allow water to run while shaving. If a razor needs to be rinsed, fill a glass with a cup of water and dunk the blade in it instead of rinsing under the faucet. Next, do not allow the water to run when brushing teeth. Only turn the water on to rinse the brush and if you need to rinse your freshly, cleaned pearly whites. This is an extremely, valuable lesson for young children as they tend to turn the water on and leave the faucet running while they brush. Also, remind young children when washing hands not to allow the water to run while soaping up; only turn the warm water on when it’s time to rinse the soap and germs away. Keep this same idea in mind when showering: get in, get wet, get soaped, get rinsed, and get out. Avoid long showers.
The kitchen and laundry rooms also pose some water awareness issues. If possible, do not rinse dishes prior to putting them in a dishwasher. Make sure the dishwater is completely full prior to running the washing cycle. Only wash clothes when you have a full load and make sure to choose the correct size load on your washing machine so the tub has the minimal amount of water for your clothes to properly wash.
Keeping these simple tips and lessons in mind will help lessen the consumption of one of Earth’s valuable resources: water.
